As your current Board Chairman, Commissioner Mark Young was elected to serve the residents of the 5th District as County Commissioner in 2012 and assumed office in January 2013.  Commissioner Young was subsequently reelected in 2014, 2016, 2018, and most recently in 2020.  During this current term, Commissioner Young was elected by his peers to serve as the Board Chairman on January 6, 2021.

Commissioner Young is a lifelong resident of Genesee County and graduated from Baker College. He is a retired Genesee County Deputy Sheriff and a former Paramedic and a Veteran of the United States Army/Michigan National Guard.

Mark has an extensive background in Community Service including work on several United Way Campaigns.

Commissioner Young currently serves on the Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce Operations Board, the Grand Blanc Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and the Genesee County's COVID-19 task force. 

 

Commissioner Young has previously served on the Genesee County Land Bank Authority Board (2013-2020), the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission Board (2013-2018), the Valley Area Agency on Aging Board, and the Genesee County 911 Consortium.  Commissioner Young also serves on the Genesee County Employees Retirement System Board.  Commissioner Young has served on the GCERS Board for 7 of the past 8 years and is the current Chairman.

Commissioner Young was previously elected by his peers to serve as the Chairman of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners in 2017 and again in 2018.

In addition to serving as an elected official, Commissioner Young has served Genesee County as the Finance Committee Chairman from 2013-2016, where he helped the Board of Commissioners to deliver balanced budgets every year.  During this period, through the Board of Commissioner’s leadership, Genesee County was able to increase the fund balance from $11,746,279.00 (2012) to $25,068,854.00 (2016).  During 2017-2018, the Board of Commissioners continued to adopt balanced budgets and increased the County’s fund balance to $39,269,457.00

During the 2017-2018 period, Genesee County experienced the greatest capital improvement project growth in several decades.  Commissioner Young was also an instrumental part in furthering the Dort Highway extension project (expected to be completed in spring of 2021).
